Quadra Bike School

2012 One of these women has taught teens bike repair in South Africa, the other bought land on Quadra Island.

"Smokey offers a great combination of patient & methodical teaching, passion for all-things-bicycle, a wealth of knowledge and experience, and a beautiful island community to take part in. The bike shop and student housing connect to amazing forested trails perfect for walking, jogging, or biking, and lead to the Quadra community centre with weekly community lunch, yoga classes, and island market. There’s so much cycling & hiking on this island, I love that we get free time to explore. Most of all, I'm excited to be feeling more and more confident to handle any bike mechanics challenge that rolls my way..."

- Kimi H, graduate Mar. 2012, living on Finn Slough, the Fraser River delta, south of Vancouver

I've been meaning to email you for a while now, to let you know that I've been working at a bike shop as a mechanic since January 3! I'm loving it. I'm still learning lots, but am much more confident after 3 months of real mechanics work than I was when I started. My boss is especially impressed with my wheel building and truing skills! Whenever we get a custom wheel to build it comes straight to me. I've built quite a few of those wheels for fat bikes, with 100mm rims and 4" tires.

- Naomi, graduate Dec. 2012, Dawson City, Yukon.

Smokey's course offers ample time to build a wealth of experience. Smokey's teaching ability is tailored based on one’s desire to learn. He is willing to teach aspiring bicycle mechanics with hands on experience with used and new bikes. From a tricky cantilever brakes to building a new bike, or who knows maybe overhauling a 3 speed hub. Smokey's got it all. -

- Justin, graduate Mar. 2012, moves around a lot.

Can't thank you enough for being our bike guru over the past month! I've learned more than I could have hoped for and can't wait to share the skills back home. Thanks for also for your boundless generosity, unending patience and wealth of interesting stories. Let me know when you find a boat bound for Australia - I'll make sure we have enough coffee! Till then.

- Phoebe, graduate Oct. 2013, Adelaide, Australia

Beautiful Setting

The Quadra Bike School is on 23 wooded acres. with 100 foot tall trees & larger. Our Animal Farm Trail runs west, directly to some of Quadra Island’s many kilometres of trails. There are hilly road rides too. A 15 km road loop starts from the Bike School’s front door and passes by the Java Bay Café and Café Aroma, two of the best espresso bars in the region.

This blue 29er Marin bike was the first one in B.C. in 2014 with a carbon fork and polymer leaf springs from LAUF Cycling in Iceland. This fork has no moving parts at all. It weighs just 990 grams, and comes with a 10-year warranty. These tires are tubeless. Frame 4 lbs. Total bike weighs 24 pounds.

My road bike is an S-Works Diverge gravel bike with disc brakes. It's good for our rough roads, easy trails, logging roads, etc. I've started customizing it and will probably never stop. Don't like the name "Diverge" but the ride is GREAT. The new name on the forks is "Stormy"
